PARADE CANCELATION
Posted: January 07, 2009

Carnival 2009 lost its third metro area parade today. Citing a lack of fund and members, the captain of the Krewe of Gladiators announced that the club would not be able to mount a parade in 2009. The St. Bernard Parish organization, which was founded in 1973, did not parade after Katrina in 2006 and 2007, but made a comeback last year at the last minute. The group hopes to stage a parade in 2010.

MARDI GRAS IGNORES RECESSION

Mardi Gras thrives in the best of times and in the worse of times, when the city and the nation need a little extra cheer. Despite the loss of three small parades that never recovered from Katrina—Shangri-La, Gladiators and Aquila (all of which promise to try to come back in 2010)—don’t expect to see any other signs of a weakening economy at this year’s Carnival celebration in New Orleans. Mardi Gras is alive and well. History shows that parades come and go. In the 1980s, some 18 krewes folded and were replaced by 27 new ones. Such is the ebb and flow of the parade calendar. In 2009 Orleans Parish presents the maximum number of parades that city ordinances allow—33.

The City can still play the national recession to its advantage. Why not announce through the Convention & Visitors Bureau that in these tough times, New Orleans still offers America’s greatest tourist bargain. It’s called MARDI GRAS and it is FREE! Not only is there no admission charge, but we also provide millions of dollars in gifts for our visitors to take home. Talk about entertainment value! Let’s see Orlando beat that offer.
