2018 CARNIVAL SEASON PREVIEW

January 01, 2018

NEW ORLEANS
Look for a fireworks display on Twelfth Night on the Mississippi River. And expect the Lundi Gras celebration on Mardi Gras Eve to move from its traditional venue as Spanish Plaza undergoes renovation. Activities will take place in the Convention Center Plaza at Julia and Convention Center Blvd.

The city's official parade reviewing stand, Gallier Hall, has been gussied up for the Tricentennial, which will be saluted by several krewes this year, most notably by Rex, Hermes, King Arthur, Endymion and Orpheus.

With the Canal Street loop now eliminated, affecting some 20 parades and scores of businesses and hotels along that portion of the route, some krewes are looking for ways to extend their routes. Sparta and Hermes will start their parades on Jefferson and Magazine instead of Napoleon Avenue. Sparta and Hermes have moved their parades up 30 minutes. Minor alterations in starting points will also affect Alla, Iris, and Pontchartrain and the ending spot for Hermes.

Significant anniversaries in 2018 include the Corner Carnival Club, 100 years, 50 years for Bacchus,Tucks and Armenius, and 25 years for Orpheus. The Bacchus anniversary parade, with J.K. Simmons riding as Bacchus L, will be televised on WWL-TV and the krewe is also publishing a history book commemorating its first half-century.
Last September the Krewe of Endymion announced that Rod Stewart and Jason Derulo would headline their Extravaganza at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in 2018. Captain and founder Ed Muniz has now led the krewe for a record-setting 52 years.

The Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club suffered damage to its headquarters on North Broad during May’s floods but has made a full recovery.

In Orleans Parish, after 42 years as founder and captain of the Krewe of Pontchartrain, Sam Z. Scandiliato turns over the reins to his son, Sam T. Scandiliato.
The mega-Krewe of Thoth will feature more animation in 2018.

Membership continues to surge in female krewes based in Orleans Parish. Nyx leads the way with more than 3,320 members, followed by 2,048 in Iris, 1,118 in Muses and 900 in Cleopatra. On the subject of female groups that contribute to Carnival, the popular Pussyfooters marching club has raised over $100,000 for Metropolitan Center Community Advocacy over the years.

The Legion of Mars has broken away from the Krewe of Alla and will parade with the Krewe of Freret.

Float builder Barry Kern of Kern Artists reports his company has fully rebuilt 10 Endymion floats, built three new signature floats for Bacchus, two for Orpheus and Tucks, and one each for Hermes and Muses.

In an effort to shorten the length of parades, the Mayor’s Mardi Gras Advisory Committee has recommended that only one unit be placed between floats and not more than twelve units appear in the front of the parade before the first float. The group is also working on a recommendation to get the issue of tents on neutral grounds under control.

METAIRIE
The Krewe of Excalibur will eliminate the Bonnabel Boulevard loop for its parade on the opening night of the season in Metairie. Meanwhile, the Krewe of Pandora, which paraded in 2016 then took a break last year, announced its return with a schedule change from its Lundi Gras slot to the Sunday before Fat Tuesday as part of a tripleheader.

The Krewe of Athena, which had earlier announced plans to move to the West Bank in 2018 after following the Krewe of Excalibur for the past three years, is set to be part of the Sunday line up that includes Napoleon at 4:30, Athena at 5:30, and at Pandora at 6:30.

NORTHSHORE
In Slidell, St. Tammany's largest city, the Krewe of Poseidon is becoming a night parade with a 6 PM starting time on Saturday, January 27, 2018. And the fun-loving Mona Lisa & Moon Pie moves to a post-Carnival season date of March 10.

Mardi Gras Decorators purchased Da Floats earlier this year. They provide floats to the northshore parades of Poseidon, Selene, Dionysus, and the Original Orpheus.

A new walking club debuts in Covington—the Krewe of Bananas Fosters—which hopes to bring public attention to the plight of children in the foster care system.

Following the two downtown Covington parades on Fat Tuesday, a post-parade Carnival celebration featuring a costume contest and entertainment will be at the Covington Trailhead at noon.

SIX MONTHS UNTIL FAT TUESDAY

August 13, 2017

In the heat of summer it's hard to find news about Mardi Gras, but Fat Tuesday is actually six months from today! We polled all parading captains looking for news and received very little information about the individual parades. In fact, more than half have not even updated their websites since last year. But there is some news to share.

NEW ORLEANS
In Orleans Parish, after 42 years as founder and captain of the Krewe of Pontchartrain, Sam Scandiliato turns over the reigns to his son.

Both Sparta and Hermes will start their parades on Jefferson and Magazine to extend their parade routes now that the Canal Street loop has been taken away from all parades (as first reported on this site March 23). Sparta has also moved its parade up 30 minutes.

The Krewe of Carrollton has teamed up with the ARC organization to decorate some of its shrimp boots (especially for out of town riders). Each boot that they decorate has a card with the name of the ARC artist who did the design work. The krewe will make a donation to ARC from the sale of these boots. Last year 6,000 Krewe of Carrollton shrimp boots were handed out.

The Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club suffered damage to its headquarters on North Board during last week's floods but plans to fully recover.

Float builder Barry Kern of Kern Artists reports his company is fully rebuilding ten Endymion floats, building three new signature floats for Bacchus, two for Orpheus and Tucks, and one each for Hermes and Muses.

The Mayor's Mardi Gras Advisory Committee is studying the number of units in each parade and between floats to see if some of the auxiliary elements should be eliminated to shorten parades. The group is also working on a recommendation to get the issue of tents on Neutral Grounds under control.

The Krewe of Choctaw claims a first as three students from the same school-Belle Chasse High-will ride as maids in 2018.

Two intriguing items in the local press that beg for more explanation-At the Antiques Roadshow taping in July at the Morial Convention Center, "Comus paintings" were appraised at $1000; and, as part of the city's Tricentennial Celebration there will be a "fireworks display on Twelfth Night."

Neal Auctions on September 10 is offering Mardi Gras memorabilia from the collection of Carnival historian, author and parade designer (Rex, Endymion, Hermes, Babylon) Henri Schindler.

This year's Krewe fundraiser for First Responders is set for Thursday, Sept. 21, at Fulton Alley.

METAIRIE
Will construction in the back of the Clearview Shopping Center finally cause a change in the standard Metairie parade route? Probably so. Three variations are being considered, including eliminating the Bonnabel loop for all parades except Argus on Fat Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Krewe of Pandora, which paraded in 2016 then took a break last year, returns, but not in its Lundi Gras slot but as part of a triple-header on the Sunday before Fat Tuesday, where the Corps de Napoleon traditionally paraded alone. Joining these krewes will be the Krewe of Athena, which had earlier announced plans to move to the West Bank in 2018. The female club had followed the Krewe of Excalibur for the past three years on the opening Friday night of the parade season. The Sunday schedule will be Napoleon 4:30, Athena 5:30, Pandora, 6:30.

NORTHSHORE PARADES
Big news in St. Tammany's largest city. The Krewe of Poseidon is becoming a night parade with a 6 PM starting time on Saturday, January 27, 2018. And the fun-loving Mona Lisa & Moon Pie moves to a post-Carnival season date of March 10.

Da Floats was purchased by Mardi Gras Decorators earlier this year. They provide floats to the north shore parades of Poseidon, Selene, Dionysus, and the Original Orpheus.

Be on the lookout for a new walking club in Covington, the Krewe of Bananas Fosters, which will raise awareness of children in the foster care system.
